Description
Indo-Pacific tropical often brilliantly colored elongate fishes head covered in scales lateral line is divided into two, with a longer part running from the head to the posterior part of the dorsal fin about 19 cm maximum remain near crevices or among rubble most are fiercely territorial; and usually live solitarily, as pairs or very small groups of a male and a few females many species hermaphroditic; some may be simultaneously hermarphroditic others protogynous hermaphrodites or protandrous hermaphrodites produce a "fluffy", round egg mass deposited by the female, which the male often guards in a small cave or burrow until they hatch some are mouthbrooders
